The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde was published on this day 129 years ago, in Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine.
Early reviews were, to put it mildly, not especially flattering; Nicholas Frankel, editor of an annotated edition of the novel, said that by August, Wilde had counted 216 attacks on his work.
So why not pile on? Literary Hub has gathered fifty one-star reviews of The Picture of Dorian Gray from modern critics — er, Amazon shoppers — in honor of the anniversary.
