Book lovers have helped raise more than $60,000 to benefit immigrants being held at border camps.
The co-owner of A Room of One’s Own bookstore in Madison, Wisconsin, announced the fundraising campaign earlier this month, and about 150 indie bookstores, small presses, and other literary organizations joined the effort.
#BookstoresAgainstBorders invited these groups to donate a portion of sales from July 5-7 to the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services, an organization that provides legal aid for migrants.
Gretchen Treu explained, on the fundraising campaign’s home page, that seeing footage of children suffering in detention camps had replaced her typical Fourth of July feelings of patriotism with fear and fury.
“To think of children very like mine living in the conditions we’re seeing, in the richest country in the world, in the supposed ‘land of the free,’ that is such a deep and growing anger in me,” she wrote. “I can't keep doing only what I have been doing.”
While the suggested bookstore-purchase period is technically over, donations are still being accepted via Classy.org.
