Fashion designer Dapper Dan has come a long way in this world.

Those more in tune with trends may be nodding, remembering how the traditional labels shut him down in the 1990s.

But we’re talking about a longer journey than that — from a regular kid whose family would’ve needed credit to buy him the first suit he fell in love with to one who now sells jackets for $2,700.

Dan, who actually prefers to be called a creative versus a designer, reflects on this moment and its significance in his life in both his new memoir, Dapper Dan: Made in Harlem, and an interview with Audie Cornish on All Things Considered.

You can listen to their conversation below or read about it on NPR's website.
