The day’s news in book mistreatment

Here’s an update on one book vandal who made the news in the past year and an SOS call for another one who remains anonymous.

The Associated Press reports that a magistrate denied Paul Dorr’s request to have a criminal mischief charge against him dismissed.

Dorr’s charge rose from a video he posted in which he burned four LGBTQ children's books from the library in Orange City, Iowa.

He had sought the dismissal on the grounds that he was singled out for prosecution because of his message, not necessarily his actions.

Meanwhile, any of our readers in Kent, England, could prove useful to police in the town of Herne Bay.

The Guardian reports that since April, about a hundred books in a charity bookshop there have had their pages ripped in half, then reshelved.

The charity’s chief executive, Ryan Campbell, told the paper that most of the damage comes in the true-crime section and out of the cashiers’ view.

Lest anyone chuckle at the placement of the vandalism: The charity that operates the bookshop provides care for children with serious and terminal illness.
