It’s National Mojito Day across the United States, so you might be thinking about Ernest Hemingway while you wait for happy hour to enjoy an adult version — or while you’re mixing up a virgin one right now.

But, caveat: the supposed inscription from Hemingway about this mint-and-lime concoction at a Havana bar is an admitted forgery, and among the many alcoholic beverages in Papa’s writing, there are few if any mojitos.

Still, says Philip Greene, author of To Have and Have Another: A Hemingway Cocktail Companion, mojito-loving bookworms can revel in one (slight) connection.

Hemingway’s skipper Gregorio Fuentes would mix up what he called the Gregorio’s Rx when the author was under the weather.

Its ingredients? Rum, lime juice, and mint leaves (plus honey syrup).

And Fuentes is believed to be one of the inspirations for Santiago in The Old Man and the Sea.

So drink up, if you’re so inclined, in honor of Hemingway today!
