Author Philip Roth’s estate — minus his book collection — was auctioned off last weekend.

(The books, you'll be happy to hear, went to the Newark Public Library.)

Journalist J. Oliver Conroy was among the few to attend in person, along with Roth’s longtime friend Russ Murdock; the majority of buyers bid online, with proceeds going to an unnamed charity.

Murdock shared several insights into Roth while he and Conroy watched the writer's furniture and personal effects be sold in an essay in the Guardian.

Roth, who died May 22, 2018, was the author of Portnoy's Complaint and the recipient of two National Book Awards (Goodbye, Columbus and Sabbath’s Theater) plus a Pulitzer Prize (American Pastoral).
