A bestselling author has acknowledged approving some — but not all — changes in the Russian translation of his latest book that some are calling revisions and others are calling censorship.
21 Lessons for the 21st Century by Yuval Noah Harari, in the English version, discusses the Russian invasion of Crimea and Vladimir Putin’s false statements about it.
But the Russian version uses Donald Trump as the example of a politician telling lies, drops mentions of the invasions in some spots, and calls it a “reattachment” in another passage.
Harari defended the first two changes as unfortunate but necessary if he were to reach Russian readers.
The latter, however, he says he did not authorize; nor did he approve of changing a reference to his husband to his partner.
Harari has his own public response to the criticisms in Newsweek, which originally reported on the changes to his work.
