We hate to be the bearer of bad news, especially on a Monday morning, but another big publisher has updated its ebook contract terms in a not-so-great way for libraries.

Macmillan announced Thursday that libraries may buy only one ebook copy of new releases upon publication; for additional licenses, they must wait eight weeks.

Last year, the publisher tested a four-month embargo for just its Tor imprint; the current policy applies to all of its imprints.

The American Library Association, along with other literacy groups, denounced the new model.

“Macmillan Publishers’ new model for library ebook lending will make it difficult for libraries to fulfill our central mission: ensuring access to information for all,” ALA President Wanda Brown said in a statement.

“Limiting access to new titles for libraries means limiting access for patrons most dependent on libraries.”
