Forty authors have published a joint letter in the Nation calling on Congress to improve conditions for those held on the US-Mexico border.

Neil Gaiman, Khaled Hosseini, Azar Nafisi, and Ocean Vuong are among the group — all of whom have migrated to the US or are the children of migrants — that declared itself “appalled by the inhumane conditions in detention centers for asylum seekers at our southern border.”

The letter lays out four demands: provide essential medical care and nutrition, reform the immigration justice system, stop spending tax dollars to force asylum seekers to wait in other countries, and re-establish safe and legal migration channels.

While the administration and border officials insist the US detention centers are humane, if crowded, other reports include claims that refugees are denied routine showers, medicine, hot meals, and adequate space.

Read the entire letter and see the signatories in the Nation.
