Over thirty years ago, reporter Jason DeParle went to great lengths to fully research poverty in the Philippines.
By that, we mean, he moved in with a family in Manila — and by that, we mean a nun “auctioned” him off to Tita and Emet Comodas.
DeParle spent several months in their home, but he never really left the family.
Ever since his stay with them, he’s kept up with them, watching their children grow up, have families of their own, and — like their father — migrate elsewhere in search of a better life.
DeParle has written a book about their journey and the countless others like it, called A Good Provider Is One Who Leaves.
