For National Dog Day, we hoped to share a few lists of the best dogs in literature.

But our early searching yielded some pretty repetitive results.

No offense to Toto, Old Yeller, Fang, Ghost, Nana, Tock, Lassie, Buck, Winn-Dixie, and Clifford — but we know there are less famous canines who deserve equal credit.

So instead, enjoy these words of wisdom from authors who recognized how great dogs are, and help us build a more comprehensive list of the best dogs in books.

Our early picks: Enzo, Jack, Loth, and Smuckers.

“Owners of dogs will have noticed that, if you provide them with food and water and shelter and affection, they will think you are god. “Once you have had a wonderful dog, a life without one, is a life diminished.” ― Dean Koontz

“There is one other reason for dressing well, namely that dogs respect it, and will not attack you in good clothes.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.”  ― Roger Caras

“You can usually tell that a man is good if he has a dog who loves him.” — W. Bruce Cameron
