A long-lost chapter of the world’s first novel has officially been discovered.

While the original, complete manuscript of The Tale of Genji was written around 1010, the oldest surviving versions are believed to have been transcribed by the poet Teika, who died in 1241, reports the Guardian.

Until the latest manuscript was found and authenticated, we had four chapters transcribed by Teika; the latest discovery is the fifth such chapter.

The “new” chapter, which describes Genji’s meeting with his future wife, has belonged to this particular family since 1743.
