If you were planning a trip to Ireland in 2022 to see James Joyce’s new resting place, don’t book those tickets quite yet.

Dr. Fritz Senn, the founder and director of the Zurich James Joyce Foundation, says the author’s final wishes aren’t as clear as Dublin city councillors seem to believe.

Joyce, an Irishman, died in Zurich during surgery and was buried there, after his wife’s request to send his body back to Ireland was denied.

Senn told the Guardian that while he won’t fight efforts to repatriate the author’s remains, should Irish officials make a formal request, he also thinks the wishes of Joyce’s grandson will play a role.

Stephen Joyce didn’t respond to requests for comments, so the Guardian wasn’t able to confirm or deny Senn’s suspicion that he’d oppose the repatriation efforts.
