You’ll note that several books on the 100 Novels That Shaped Our World list would be considered middle-grade or young-adult works.

That certainly wouldn’t surprise author Kerry Hudson, who wrote an essay for the Guardian — on the heels of the His Dark Materials series release — about why books we read as children affect us so deeply and for so long.

For Hudson, those books are, of course, those that make up the His Dark Materials trilogy.
