There’s no denying that selling books to readers is much easier once you’ve gotten them to try the first one.

But how do you persuade someone who’s never heard of you to hand over money with no guarantee they’ll be pleased with the purchase?

Barbara Linn Probst, whose debut novel comes out next summer, has a pretty clear vested interest in the answer to that question.

So she posed it to ten reader groups on Facebook and shared the results on Jane Friedman’s blog.
