At least one writer wasn’t following #cockygate and its aftermath very closely.

BoingBoing reports that Christine Feehan has applied for the exclusive right to use the word “dark” in “series of fiction works, namely, novels and books.”

You can see the application on the United States Patent and Trademark Office website, which indicates that it hasn’t been assigned an examiner yet.

Feehan is the author of several bestselling series, including one called Dark, though she’s far from the only author to use the word in a book title, of course.

The application is reminiscent of romance author Faleena Hopkins’s efforts — eventually abandoned — to trademark the word “cocky” in book titles.

Hopkins’s quest spawned a huge backlash among the romance and overall writing community, inspiring the derisive hashtag #cockygate.
