It’s appropriate that comedian Jimmy Kimmel’s new book hits stands in time for Giving Tuesday.

Why? Because proceeds from The Serious Goose, a kids’ book, will benefit children’s hospitals around the country.

Kimmel’s son, Billy, underwent heart surgery as a newborn to correct a congenital heart defect.

The experience has inspired Kimmel to engage in health-care activism, while Billy and his sister have, of course, inspired the book.

NPR’s Lulu Garcia-Navarro talked with Kimmel about writing and illustrating The Serious Goose, as well as the events leading up to its creation; you can listen to their conversation below or read a transcript.
