Speaking of literary adaptations — it appears that critics aren’t exactly purring with pleasure for the latest version of the musical Cats.
Once again, though, T.S. Eliot’s estate is weighing in with its prediction of how the author of the poem upon which the musical is based would react to modern developments.
Clare Reihill administers the poet’s estate, which was not involved in the latest film.
Over the summer, she told the Guardian that Eliot would’ve likely approved of the upcoming Cats movie based on the trailer; now, she says that he probably wouldn’t have been bothered as reviewers' claws came out.
“I think he would have had a sense of humour about it, he was very open-minded, he liked having his head blown,” Reihill said. “He was an unusual person and this is such an unusual thing.”
Judi Dench, Taylor Swift, Idris Elba, and Ian McKellen are among the many big names starring in Cats, which hits US and UK theaters tomorrow.
