A charitable gesture … or an attempt to redeem their public image?
The Broadway adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird will be performed for 18,000 New York City public school students — for free — at Madison Square Garden in February.
Playbill reports that it’s the first time a Broadway show will be performed at the arena.
It’s also a dramatic turnaround from the headlines the play made this spring.
The producers of the play, adapted by screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, had sent cease-and-desist letters to other theaters around the country who had planned to perform an older dramatic retelling of Harper Lee’s classic novel.
A few weeks after those letters made the news, though, the producers changed their tune, in a way — they offered free use of the new play.
