The Maryland State Library has given a grant of $100,000 for book purchases to the state’s twelve major prisons and four satellite locations.
For some context, the Baltimore Sun says, those twelve prisons typically each have about $1,000 per year for reading material — and prisoners there, unlike in other states, don’t have access to e-readers, only physical books, which must be screened thoroughly when they’re donated or gifted by an inmate’s loved one.
Incarcerated people can truly change their lives by reading, according to both an inmate who works at his prison’s library as a clerk and the woman who supervises all the state’s prison libraries.
