When we think of story structure, we often think of plot progression and not necessarily the literal way in which its pieces are arranged and grouped.
Novelist Wendelin Van Draanen isn’t pushing you to take dramatic liberties with fragments and single-word lines, if that doesn’t suit your story.
What you can do, more subtly, is consider linking, say, the number of sections in your story to something else — in the example of her novel The Running Dream, there are five sections to mirror the five stages of grief.
Van Draanen shares more ways in which your story structure can enhance your novel at Writer’s Digest.
