Entertainment Weekly unveiled an excerpt from Suzanne Collins’s upcoming Hunger Games prequel today — and it has certainly made a splash.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (releasing May 19), as it turns out, looks at the future President Snow’s roots … and shows his more human side.

In EW’s words, this version of Snow is “a teenager born to privilege but searching for something more, a far cry from the man we know he will become. Here, he’s friendly. He’s charming. And, for now anyway, he’s a hero.”

Given the hints about the novel's timing, expectations had been high that the book would star Mags, a past Hunger Games winner who serves as a mentor during the original trilogy.
