Move over, American Dirt — there’s another upcoming book grabbing the headlines and stirring up heated debate.
Former national security adviser John Bolton’s memoir about serving in the Trump administration, The Room Where It Happened: A White House Memoir, won’t be released until March 17.
But leaks from the copy sent to the National Security Council for review have intensified the drama around Donald Trump’s impeachment trial.
The New York Times first reported, and the Associated Press has also confirmed, that the book describes an August conversation in which (according to Bolton) the president told him he wanted to withhold aid from Ukraine until it helped him investigate Joe Biden.
The White House, in addition to denying such a conversation happened, called the timing of the leaks suspect, given that The Room Where It Happened went live for preorders on Sunday and that the Trump defense team had presented its case to the Senate just a day before.
Bolton; his publisher, Simon & Schuster; and the literary agency representing him, Javelin, denied these accusations.
