Jane Austen is, yet again, in the theaters, with a new adaptation of Emma hitting screens today.

This version stars Anya Taylor-Joy, better known for spookier films, and was adapted for the screen by Booker Prize-winning author Eleanor Catton (The Luminaries, in 2013).

NPR’s Justin Chang says not to expect a reimagining of the Austen novel, in the vein of last year's Little Women, but that the film’s faithfulness to the source material works in its favor.

His opinion seems to be fairly popular, as the film currently has an 88% positive ranking on Rotten Tomatoes (though it’s lower on other aggregation sites).

You can read or listen to Chang’s entire review on NPR.

Meanwhile, for the strictly literary, we have another novel from 2018 Booker Prize winner Anna Burns.

Little Constructions, which came out in the US on Tuesday, will remind many readers of Milkman, which earned Burns the Booker, according to literary critics.

It examines the world of the Doe family — a group of criminals and their victims — and their hold on a small Irish town.

Critical reviews are generally positive; you can see a sampling of them at Bookmarks.
