The traditional favorite character in Louisa May Alcott’s beloved Little Women seems to be Jo.

But recently, public opinion seems to be shifting toward her sometimes nemesis: Amy.

Novelist Jane Smiley argued for Amy’s respect in the collection The March Sisters: On Life, Death, and Little Women, and Florence Pugh brought new life — and maturity — to the character in Greta Gerwig’s 2019 movie adaptation of Little Women.

And that, says journalist Kelly Blewett, stays true to the sister upon whom Amy is based: May Alcott Nieriker.
