C.S. Lakin has one more type of character that she wants authors to make effective use of in their novels.

Incidental characters, not to be confused with minor ones, could be removed from a novel and not totally tear the fabric of its plot apart.

But that said, these characters are not simply filler — when used properly, they do serve a specific purpose for the narrative.
