The literary world became a bit smaller yesterday, with the death of Chilean author Luis Sepúlveda at age seventy.

The Guardian reports that he died of COVID-19, nearly two months after he became the first case of the disease in the Asturias region of Spain.

Sepúlveda was exiled from Chile by dictator Augusto Pinochet in the 1980s and spent most of the rest of his life in Europe.

He is best known for The Old Man Who Read Love Stories, which also became an acclaimed movie years later, as well as The Story of a Seagull and The Cat Who Taught Her To Fly.

You can read more about Sepúlveda’s life in his obituary in the Guardian.
