Sally Rooney’s award-winning novel, Normal People, began as a short story, published to some acclaim in The White Review.

The author, though, didn’t feel finished with the characters Marianne and Connell, and the rest is obviously history.

The White Review has shared the story, “At the Clinic,” online for everyone to read and enjoy.

And Literary Hub, in linking to the short story, also adds an interview Rooney did two years ago — but two years after the tale was published — for further insight into her creative journey.
