Can you really call it a TV adaptation if there isn’t a particular source material?

That’s the question many Lisbeth Salander fans may be asking right now, with the news that Amazon is developing a series that takes place in her world and stars her, but doesn’t borrow any one Millennium book’s plot.

Variety reports that the project, titled The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, plunks Salander into today’s world but doesn’t continue or borrow from the series begun by the late Stieg Larsson.

The show also doesn’t have a lead writer or actress yet, though it has producers and executive producers, the latter of which includes Andy Harries of The Crown and Outlander fame.
