Last month, the Romance Writers of America revealed a new award intended to signal the organization’s push for diversity.
With the issue of racial injustice grabbing headlines across the country, the RWA has announced more attempts to work on its diversity problems.
Any black author in RWA can attend this year’s online conference for free, and nonmembers are invited to apply for one hundred scholarships to the conference, according to a press release that came out Friday.
Additionally, the RWA says it will add to its Diversity and Inclusion Resources page and seek black academics who would be eligible for RWA grants.
The RWA has been under fire in recent years for the lack of diversity in its signature awards, and found itself in particularly hot water when it attempted to censure author Courtney Milan for her comments about racism in another writer’s work.
You can read Friday's statement in full on the RWA website.
