If you’ve read reviews of any product online, you’ve probably seen at least one single-star review in which the writer admits to not having used or purchased the item, or who simply leaves a single star with no explanation.

Goodreads, unfortunately, is no stranger to that problem.

And worse, for the authors targeted, the site doesn’t seem to take action against it.

Danika Ellis introduces us to a user simply named Charles, who has gained notoriety among authors for his 6,500 one-star ratings across the site — and for Goodreads' refusal to put an end to this.

Ellis dove into Charles’s pile of single-star reviews — often left before ARCs were even available — and found that “the vast majority were queer women lit, with some other LGBTQ books, and a sprinkling of non-LGBTQ books (about 1% of the books rated).”
