For the first time ever, a Black British author has topped the country’s bestseller list.

Reni Eddo-Lodge’s Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People about Race came out in 2017 to acclaim, landing on bestseller lists and winning multiple awards.

But in the weeks since the killing of George Floyd, a Black man, at the hands of a white police officer inspired headlines and widespread protests, Eddo-Lodge’s book has featured on many an anti-racism reading list — and, thus, many a shopping list.

Eddo-Lodge had warm words for the many authors who inspired and supported her writing, but harsh ones for the establishment, reports the Guardian.

Her honor, she said, is “a horrible indictment of the publishing industry,” adding, “Can’t help but be dismayed by this - the tragic circumstances in which this achievement came about. The fact that it’s 2020 and I’m the first.”
