The reopening of libraries — or the lack thereof — is a highly contentious topic right now.
We’re not here to make any grand statements about the wisdom of any decision, but rather to present some new research on the survival of the SARS CoV-2 virus on library materials and surfaces.
The first report from the REopening Archives, Libraries, and Museums (REALM) project — a collaboration among several entities — found that the virus wasn’t detectable on materials stored in standard conditions after three days of quarantine.
The test was run on hardback book covers, paperback book covers, plain paper pages inside a closed book, plastic book coverings, and DVD cases.
