We may have left the era - at least temporarily — of food samples, but thankfully, book samples are still en vogue.

(Sorry, it’s about snack time here at Fussy.)

The New York Times shared four excerpts today, for your sampling pleasure: one nonfiction work, two memoirs, and a novel.

Burning Down the House, by Julian E. Zelizer.

Zelizer, a history professor at Princeton and a CNN political analyst, examines how Newt Gingrich and his allies drastically altered American politics — for the worse, in the author’s opinion. Read an excerpt of Burning Down the House.

Notes on a Silencing, by Lacy Crawford.

Crawford, who was assaulted as a student at an elite boarding school, learned as an adult just how long and hard the school worked to bury a history of abuse complaints in this memoir — and how it’s far from alone. Read an excerpt of Notes on a Silencing.

The Beauty in Breaking, by Michele Harper.

Harper, an emergency room physician, explores how each of us is broken, in some way, and in the process, she learns to heal her own wounds. Read an excerpt of The Beauty in Breaking.

Want, by Lynn Steger Strong.

Want brings together Elizabeth, the matriarch of a middle-class family filing for bankruptcy, and her long-lost childhood friend who, coincidentally, is facing a crisis of her own. Read an excerpt from Want.
