If ever there were a definitive answer to the question “what have we been reading since the pandemic started?”, the Washington Post may have found it.

Using data from publishers, libraries, associations, data firms, and multiple surveys of its website’s readers, it has painted a detailed picture of 2020 reading habits.

For instance, its most frequently read authors in May reflect how poll respondents were processing the lockdowns, while a follow-up in August shows a marked move toward race and social-justice issues.

Children’s books also enjoyed a surge, as did anything seen as escapist.
