Actress Natalie Portman is releasing a children’s book on October 20.
In the spirit of the great Toni Morrison quote, she discovered a gap in the available children’s literature, as she raised two kids, and decided to fill it.
Natalie Portman’s Fables will retell classic tales, but in a gender-neutral way and one that she feels is “more reflective of the world in which we live,” according to her Instagram post.
More specifically, the Oscar-winning actress explained that while books aimed at boys were simply for entertainment, the books aimed at girls carried strong social-justice messages, making them far more serious and adult.
The National has more from the personal letter that Portman shared to accompany the post.
