If you had strong feelings — positive or negative — about Netflix’s adaptation of The Three-Body Problem, it might be time to calm down.
Five Republican senators have sent a letter to Netflix asking it to reconsider those plans, in response to some comments the book’s author made in 2019.
The New Yorker asked Liu Cixin about China’s mass internments of Uighur Muslims last year; the author responded that it was preferable to allowing them to commit acts of terror and that it was helping the Uighurs escape poverty, too.
Human rights groups have condemned the internment camps, which the Chinese government describes as “re-education” centers, but which activists say inflict forced labor, sterilization, and other horrors on the detainees.
The GOP senators’ letter tells Netflix that they have “significant concerns with Netflix’s decision to do business with an individual who is parroting dangerous CCP propaganda” and cites the New Yorker interview, according to the Guardian.
Netflix so far has not responded to requests for comment.
