Editor and author Stuart Horwitz began his memoir as a letter to his daughter as she went off to college.

But this powerful prompt can serve writers at work (or hoping to begin work) on fiction or creative nonfiction, too.

Why?

Horwitz says it’s because achieving intimacy with someone you don’t know can be difficult.

Choosing a real-life person to address, on the other hand, no matter whether you intend to share the letter with them, allows you to express an actual voice.

For more on why Horwitz and others have written letters as creative prompts, check out his column on Jane Friedman’s blog.
