Buzzkill warning: a new study seems to call for less artwork and more words in children’s books.

Literary Hub shared a study done by Carnegie Mellon University that removed “extraneous imagery” from children’s books and had groups of first- and second-graders read either the original or the altered version.

The study found that readers in the latter group followed the written storylines better.

Jonny Diamond, who shared the study in Lit Hub, counters that ensuring kids learn to like reading is a better goal in the long run; you can read his take here and check out the Carnegie Mellon study results here.
