The rules for formatting external dialogue are fairly straightforward — sure, they vary in different countries, but at least each country has a set of rules.

Internal dialogue, though? Language guru Mignon Fogarty hates to break it to those who love rules, but there isn’t one concrete answer.

Her general advice is to avoid using quotation marks for internal dialogue and to consult with your editor for the other options, which she presents on the Grammar Girl blog.
