Today we're interviewing medical-thriller author Geoffrey M. Cooper.

Cooper is a retired cancer researcher and academic administrator, having held positions at Harvard Medical School and Boston University as professor, department chair, and associate dean.

He is the author of several scientific texts and is now using his experience in academic medicine as background for writing medical thrillers.

He lives in Ogunquit, Maine.

SADYE: How did you come to see yourself as a writer, and what inspired you to seek publication?

GEOFFREY: I’d always wanted to write a novel, and wrote several academic books during my scientific career.

When I stepped down from active teaching and research, I decided it was time to give the novel a try!

That was The Prize, published in 2018, and my fourth medical thriller is now at the publisher.

SADYE: Which of your characters would you most and least like to trade places with?

GEOFFREY: I’d most like to trade with Brad Parker, protagonist of Nondisclosure and Forever.

My least favorite is sleazy Eric Prescott, from The Prize.

SADYE: Which of your characters would you most and least like to become romantically involved with?

GEOFFREY: Most would be Karen Richmond, the smart and sexy investigator from Nondisclosure and Forever.

Least, limiting it to women, would be the devious Alice Gurney in Forever.

SADYE: What message or theme would you like readers to take away from your work?

GEOFFREY: That medical research is not the impersonal pursuit of objective truth that many believe.

Rather, scientists are often highly ambitious with the same flaws as individuals in any other profession.

SADYE: What experience in your past or general aspect of your life has most affected your writing?

GEOFFREY: My fiction has been greatly influenced by my experience as a cancer researcher and academic administrator.

Scientists are capable of an enormous range of misconduct, which is sad but makes good material for novels.
