No matter how you feel about the current state of affairs in the United States, there’s a new book for you.

Jess Walter wanted to write about class divides and labor struggles, but not in a “didactic” way.

So, as he told NPR’s Ari Shapiro, he looked to fiction and to the past.

The result is The Cold Millions, a novel set in Spokane, Washington, in 1909 — a time and place where the labor movement was in full swing.

You can learn more about the novel and how Walter sees its themes echoed today by listening to the interview or reading a transcript.

But we know many readers are looking for a complete escape and not an alternate version of a similar reality.

In that case, NPR is also ready, but with three romance novel recommendations, while the New York Times suggests three new releases in the historical fiction genre.
