No matter how you feel about the current state of affairs in the United States, there’s a new book for you.
Jess Walter wanted to write about class divides and labor struggles, but not in a “didactic” way.
So, as he told NPR’s Ari Shapiro, he looked to fiction and to the past.
The result is The Cold Millions, a novel set in Spokane, Washington, in 1909 — a time and place where the labor movement was in full swing.
