We loved The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett during our childhood, as many of you doubtlessly did.

A look at it from an adult’s perspective, though, makes clear that it’s far from simply a child’s book.

Aida Edemariam introduces us to the personal struggles and tragedies that marked Burnett’s life and how they’re clearly reflected in her classic novel — and then takes it a step further, by showing us how neatly the tale and its messages fit into modern times, too.

Read her take on The Secret Garden in the Guardian.
