Winter doesn’t seem to be most people’s favorite season, and the COVID-19 pandemic probably isn’t improving their outlook on it.

But writer Katherine May tells NPR’s Rachel Martin that we’re better served by seeing these challenges as transformative and by embracing them, versus hiding from them.

Her latest book, Wintering, takes the characteristics of meteorological winter and applies them to periods of our individual lives.

In her case, for instance, she experienced a “wintering” during a time when she and her husband both fell seriously ill.
