Scene analysis seems to be the topic du jour among the writing blogs we follow.

This contribution to the trend from Writers Helping Writers focuses on one specific kind of scene: the opening one.

Editor Marissa Graff identifies the three key elements for an opening scene so that you can pique a reader’s interest and keep them wanting more.

She uses the beginning of The Hunger Games as an illustrative example of a book that both introduces a character and adds drama (but for the protagonist) in its opening pages.
