Love stories certainly contain conflict — but, warns David Corbett, don’t mistake it for the kind you might find in, say, a crime or war novel.

In those, there are true adversaries who wish to defeat one another; your goal in a love story (whether it’s romantic or platonic love) is to unite the pair, despite the obstacles they face.

Corbett plots out how love stories progress, no matter the core source of the tension, and offers several questions that writers should answer in order to keep the love plot adorable, not adversarial.
