Authors are just like us — fascinated by Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and all the characters, minor and major, that populate its world.

Novelist Molly Greeley is a prime example of that phenomenon.

She previously imagined how Charlotte Lucas’s marriage to Mr. Collins would have progressed in The Clergyman’s Wife; now, she presents a fully fleshed-out version of Anne de Bourgh in The Heiress

Intriguingly, she posits that Anne’s illness in the original novel is an addiction to laudanum.

Greeley shared how she came upon this idea for Anne’s past and previews her vision of Anne’s future in an episode of the New Books Network podcast.

Literary Hub has both the podcast episode and a partial transcription of it for Austenites’ pleasure.
