A feedback method that works for one author may not serve another writer well. 

For Lisa Cooper Ellison — a writer, editor, and coach — the single-chapter analysis definitely falls into the latter category.

In her experience, looking at individual parts was inefficient, time-wise, and also picked at the cohesion of her overall project.

Ellison gives more precautionary advice about single-chapter critiques and how to best approach them, if you must, in a guest post for Jane Friedman’s blog.
