The Northmoor Project announced Monday that it did not acquire enough backers to purchase J.R.R. Tolkien’s house in Oxford, England.

In a post on its website, organizers said they’d be contacting all donors about the next steps for their gifts — some crowdfunding sites allow for donors to be refunded, while others require that the donation go to a charitable purpose that may not be the original one.

The Northmoor Project promised that it would still work to share Tolkien’s legacy, including by building its own literary center.

Last year, questions arose about the charity’s attempt to raise $6 million to buy the home of the Lord of the Rings author; the Guardian notes that the Tolkien Society kept apart from the project, citing concerns over plans for spiritual retreats and a bed-and-breakfast, among other aspects.
