Writer’s Digest editor Moriah Richard has previously discussed how to incorporate an animal into your stories and develop it as a character.

Now, she has a new nonhuman angle to explore: that of fantasy creatures.

Richard distinguishes these characters from true monsters — we’re talking the dragons from the Song of Ice and Fire series or the tracker jackers from The Hunger Games books, both of which can inflict serious damage but aren’t full-on villains, versus the shark in Jaws.

So just like with any other aspect of a fantasy series, Richard says, you’ll need to develop rules and characteristics that make sense, yet don’t overwhelm the readers.

She has recommendations for what types of decisions to make about your fantastical creature in her post at Writer’s Digest.
